This former stakes winner (who still holds the track record at Presque Isle for a mile and 70 yards!) is as sweet and polite as he is handsome and athletic! Carpenter’s Call is a 7-year-old, 16.2-1/2 hand gelding that is just an absolute joy to be around, whether you’re on the ground or in the saddle – so mannerly and happy to do what is asked!
Carpenters Call came to me in 2024 after a successful career (he won the Peach Street Stakes also placed in the Grade 3 Appleton Stakes!) and nearly $200K in earnings. While he was sound and could have easily continued to race, his owners did not want to risk losing him in a claim and instead called his breeder (who had followed his career) and asked where she would like him to retire…lucky for me, the answer was Brownstead Farm!
Currently, he is working on developing a solid foundation on the flat with a focus on suppleness, flexibility and proper transitions. He has also recently started jumping and is currently putting together small courses (2’-2’3”), as well as doing pole exercises and simple grid work. In addition, one day a week he hacks out in fields and around the farm and has a ground-covering, but very manageable gallop. He has schooled off-property once and took everything in stride, and will be going on more off-site outings in the near future.
He has also recently been ridden bridleless a handful of times and is happy to walk, trot and canter through trot poles and even small jumps with just a neck rope (I find teaching them to go bridleless really helps them to better understand leg and seat cues)!
While he is a “more go than whoa” type of horse, he is easily rated and loves to melt into a rhythm with his rider and develops a nice elasticity to their aids (especially the almighty inside leg to outside rein – he’s a big believer in that concept!). Having had the opportunity to put 4-5 different riders (of all levels) on his back, I’ve found he quickly acclimates to the level of the rider and doesn’t offer more speed or momentum than they’re capable of. Between that and how straightforward he is to train and bring along, I would put him solidly in the category of “amateur friendly.”
As a 2-year-old he did incur a hairline fracture to a hind fetlock and his connections opted to put a small screw in just to be safe. He had ample time to rehab and raced the majority of his career (all 5 wins!) thereafter. Soon after he started his off-track training, we noticed the screw might be bothering him in his new job (he was a bit tentative about bending to the right and fussy about picking that hoof), and after consulting with a surgeon, we opted to take it out. After some down time, he started back under saddle and has been training forwardly ever since, with no limitations on a second career. We do have a surgical report and xrays available for review as part of a PPE and he flexes and jogs sound on it.
Carpenter’s Call's price is TBD (on-site trial rides and PPEs welcome). His price is subject to change as his resume expands.
